As a full-time professional singer, I hold the privilege of entertaining others through the enchanting gift of music. Each day, I perform in numerous retirement homes, bringing joy to seniors with carefully selected songs. While it can be heart-wrenching to witness the gradual decline of the people I sing for, I choose to focus on the brighter side of life. I see the miracles and moments of joy in their lives, and I am immensely grateful for the hours of happiness they share with me. Every song I sing is seasoned with love and intention, as I feel like a singing usher guiding souls to a promised land, somewhere over the rainbow.
Today, however, I find myself at a funeral—a poignant reminder that another soul has gone home. This individual is now singing with the angels, free from the night and tears of earthly existence. In this moment, I am not here to entertain. Instead, my singing serves as a balm for the hearts of those who have lost a loved one. There are no applause or accolades to seek, no taps of approval from myself or God. I am honored to share in this sacred moment, working hand in hand with my Creator each day through the unique gift of music.
I reflect on the day when it will be my turn to receive song, knowing that someday, someone will sing for me, and I too will join the Angels in chorus, proclaiming, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty.”
